Our Commitment to the Environment

At SMART we drive innovation with the aim of contributing to a greener planet and our software helps farmers to be compliant with environmental protection standards. Using SMART, farmers make accurate and efficient use of fertilizers, preventing over-fertilization and its negative impact on the environment.

One of the biggest challenges of the modern agriculture is to provide food for the world's rapidly growing population, while minimizing the strain on the environment. SMART Fertilizer Management software fights fertilizer misuse which has severe adverse effects on the environment, such as:

  • Contamination of Groundwater and Surface-Water

Fertilizers accumulated in the soil may leach into lower layers and eventually reach the groundwater. The rate, in which the excess nutrients leach, depends on several factors, such as soil type, the nutrient electric charge, the nutrient concentration etc.

Nitrates (NO3), being highly soluble, have the highest potential of reaching groundwater. Leaching of nitrate from agricultural fields can increase nitrate concentration in the groundwater to levels intolerable for drinking water quality.

In addition, unused fertilizers can also be washed to lakes, rivers and reservoirs and lead to growth of algae and weeds.

  • Damage to Soil Structure

When accumulated in soil, excess fertilizers increase salinity build-up and reduce soil fertility. Subsequently, soil structure is damaged and soil erosion is promoted. As such, more and more existing farmland gets gravely degraded up to the point that it is too depleted to produce food. This is a global danger to food security, but also a core concern to every agricultural business regardless of its size.

  • Polluted Food-products and Air Pollution

SMART software works towards a reduction of the potential for pollution, by delivering fertilizer plans that promote usage of fertilizers in the proper amount, at the right time of the growth stage. Also important is the fact, that SMART recommends fertilizer mixes that includes micronutrients, which not only adds to the health of the plant, but can also fight micronutrients deficiency in humans.

  • Our Goal

Our goal at SMART is to make farmers more successful, while at the same time they can be confident of doing their part in protecting the local ecosystem.  SMART Fertilizer Management software is designed to prevent over and under fertilization. The positive environmental impact is clear: it keeps fertilizers from leaching into ground water and surface water sources, it preserves soil structure, and allows for producing healthier crops and food.
